An armed man breached security at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., on April 25, 2026, forcing President Donald Trump and other senior officials to evacuate.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, allegedly pushed through a security checkpoint while carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and knives. Law enforcement stopped him before he reached the main ballroom where Trump and administration officials were gathered.
Gunfire erupted near the security screening area during the confrontation. A Secret Service agent was struck by a bullet that hit his protective vest and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Response and Evacuation
Secret Service personnel immediately moved Trump and other protected officials away from the danger zone as law enforcement secured the hotel. Hundreds of journalists, government officials and guests inside the Washington Hilton were ordered to evacuate or take shelter.
The dinner’s program was canceled as authorities searched the hotel for additional threats. No fatalities were reported in the attack, though Allen sustained injuries and was taken into custody.
The Investigation
Federal prosecutors charged Allen with attempted assassination of the president, along with federal firearms and assault charges. Investigators have examined his background, including his work in engineering, computer science, teaching and video-game development.
People who knew Allen previously described him as intelligent and quiet. Authorities are investigating his recent activities, writings and movements in the days before the attack to determine his motive and whether the incident was planned specifically against Trump or other administration members.
Security Questions and Aftermath
The breach has prompted scrutiny over security arrangements at the event, despite extensive measures being in place. An armed suspect was able to approach a checkpoint at an event attended by the president, vice president and numerous senior government officials.
President Trump praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for their rapid response, stating their actions prevented a more devastating attack. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the security breakdown and events leading to the shooting.
